What I'm listening to..

Since having a small needy infant who is rather demanding of my time, I've found it difficult to keep up to speed on my general knowledge and current affairs. Reading time has been put on the back burner and even though Eva now retires to bed at an early 7 pm, I've become obsessed with watching Gordon Ramsay's Hotel Nightmares while I shovel my chicken & veg in. (I haven't eaten a meal at a reasonable speed in 8 months. Dinner time in my house goes 'Ok, she's down . SERVE. EAT EAT EAT' Always the fear she will wake up as I eat the first forkful.)

So podcasts have been my salvation so I can hold an actual adult conversation with anyone and everyone who will give me the time of day. I pop Eva in the buggy with a brightly coloured 'Baby Einstein' toy and stick the headphones on to while away an hour or so with some podcasts for company. These are the podcasts that have been getting me through my spring walks around Brighton.

Table Manners with Jessie Ware
Jessie presents this food based podcast with her mum Lennie who is just the most amazing woman ever.  These two are quite the comedy duo alone but each week they have an interesting guest, including Ed Sheeran and Ralf Little. The only downside is I always get really hungry listening..

My Dad wrote a porno
I've gone all the way back to the first series of this podcast. The first podcast I listened to and honestly I laugh out loud so many times in public that people must think I am a lunatic. I mean the title says it all, Jamie's dad has written a porno and they read it out whilst critiquing*. This podcast will always hold a special place in my heart because I listened to it to keep myself awake on the first night we brought Eva home as I was so scared I would fall asleep. Also Rocky Flinstone is from Northern Ireland and I'm kind of proud such a national treasure is from the homeland.
*taking the absolute piss.

The High Low
I only discovered this about two months ago but I am addicted. So much so that now they are on maternity leave, I've gone back to 2017 to listen to all of those. The amazing Pandora Sykes and Dolly Alderton present the weeks topical news, unpicking both the serious & silly whilst making it very engaging. They make books, articles and podcast recommendations and essentially are doing all the hard work for me.

Death in ice valley
This is a new podcast looking into the mysterious death of a woman in Norway in 1970. Was she a spy? Was she murdered? I DON'T KNOW BUT I'M GRIPPED. Honestly I spent all of Saturday night googling mysteries and it was so intriguing. I thought it would be difficult to get into this ones as the visuals are so important such as the harsh and wet valley the woman was found in, however the presenters are so engaging and descriptive with their language that it feels like you are right alongside them throughout. I’m impatiently awaiting the next one.

The week unwrapped
A really interesting concept for a podcast as they look at what hasn't made the headlines this week but should have. A chance to get some insight into stories that you may have missed but are so important such as the ongoing issue with rape in India and the debate on shaming your children via social media.

How I built this with Guy Raz
This podcast interviews the individuals who have built the companies which we rely on everyday. The founders of Instagram, Airbnb and Dyson and many more discuss why and how they built their companies and more importantly what drives them to be successful. It's really interesting to hear the backstory to some of the most innovative and successful people in business and it's very inspiring. The informal chat format of the podcast makes it easy to listen to and not too information heavy.
